Super Typhoon Champi skirts southern Guam with 150 mph winds; island loses power

Champi passed about 10 miles south of the southern Guam village of Merizo early Sunday local time (Saturday afternoon CT), sparing most of the U.S. territory its worst winds, the National Weather Service said; it was upgraded to a super typhoon with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph as it moved away to the west-northwest and could reach Category 5 by late Monday morning. Typhoon warnings remained in effect for Guam and Rota, and the weather service reported the island lost power shortly after 5 a.m. local time, the Pacific Daily News said. Guam's governor had placed the island in Condition of Readiness 1 on Saturday and opened emergency shelters, with southern coastal villages told to evacuate.
