Corrections Policy

Accuracy comes first. When we make a mistake, we correct it promptly and transparently.

What we correct

• Corrections fix factual errors: a wrong name, number, date, place, quote or attribution.
• Clarifications fix wording that was accurate but could mislead or was missing needed context.
• Updates add new information to a developing story. Updated items show the time of the update.

How corrections appear

• The corrected item is fixed in place, with a note at the end of the item describing what changed and when (Central Time).
• Significant corrections are also listed below, in the corrections log.
• If a video brief contains an error, we note the correction on the page and replace or annotate the video.
• We don't silently remove items. If an item has to be withdrawn, we say so and explain why.

Source changes

News reports change as stories develop. Casualty counts and other figures often rise over a day. Our summaries reflect the linked sources at the time of publication; later figures appear in later updates, with the time stated.
