Trump administration proposes requiring tax filers to disclose citizenship and work status to the IRS

The Trump administration has proposed requiring U.S. taxpayers to disclose their citizenship and work-authorization status to the IRS on the annual Form 1040, Fox News reported early Friday. A draft 2026 Form 1040 posted in late August asks whether the filer and spouse are a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or an alien lawfully authorized to work, with Yes/No checkboxes; a similar question appears on draft Schedule 3-A used for refundable credits. Treasury says the change aims to stop illegal migrants from collecting ineligible federal benefits and could save taxpayers up to $2 billion; critics told the Associated Press it could become an immigration-enforcement tool.
