California, New York and two dozen other states, cities and counties sued the U.S. Transportation Department on Friday over finalized vehicle fuel-economy standards of 34.9 miles per gallon by 2031, down from 50.4 mpg under the Biden rules, Reuters reported. California Attorney General Rob Bonta said the rules violate the requirement that standards be set at the maximum feasible level; Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy defended the rule as letting manufacturers build cars families need at a lower price. The department said the regulation cuts manufacturers’ average compliance cost by $1,289 per vehicle but raises lifetime fuel costs by more than $1,600 and would increase U.S. gasoline use through 2050 by about 4.6%, or roughly 121 billion gallons, versus the prior rules.
