DOT finalizes lower CAFE standards: about 34.9 mpg by 2031
The Transportation Department on Monday released a final rule resetting Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards for cars and light trucks, rolling back the Biden-era path toward 50.4 miles per gallon by model year 2031, Roll Call reported. Under the new “Freedom Means Affordable Cars” rule, NHTSA estimates a fleet average of about 34.9 mpg by model year 2031; DOT said the change would cut the average cost of a new vehicle by about $1,300. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the rule ended what he called an “illegal mandate” that forced more electric vehicles, while the Environmental Defense Fund cited NHTSA analysis that Americans could spend about $1,600 more on gas under the looser standards.
