Update: Trump expects more Iran talks this week; Araghchi says Tehran is ready for war or diplomacy as oil jumps
Graphic: World Brief Now

President Donald Trump told Axios on Sunday he expects more talks with Iran this week after rejecting Tehran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, saying Iran “overplayed” its hand and wants a deal he will not accept, Fox News and Reuters reported. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told NBC News’ “Meet the Press” that Iran is “fully prepared for the war to be resumed” — “even if it comes to a doomsday war” — while remaining open to diplomacy, and that Trump’s public rejection had not yet been delivered through mediators. Brent crude rebounded more than 3% on Monday, rising $3.98 to $108.30 a barrel at 0959 GMT, Reuters reported, after the stalemate.
