Vice President JD Vance stopped his speech at a rally in North Platte, Nebraska, on Thursday and led the audience in the Lord’s Prayer after a person in the risers behind him appeared to collapse, the Associated Press reported. As emergency workers responded, Vance asked those “who are of the praying type” to join him, then crossed himself and recited the prayer as some in the crowd folded their hands and joined in, the AP said.

What happened in North Platte

Vance was speaking at a midterm campaign rally for Sen. Pete Ricketts and Gov. Jim Pillen, both of whom are seeking reelection, when attendees on the risers behind him grew concerned about a woman among them and flagged down law enforcement, USA Today reported.

“Looks like we got a medical issue everybody, so let's just say a prayer and hope everybody's okay,” Vance said, according to USA Today, before asking from the stage for his team’s doctor. “We'll all just stay calm and let these great doctors and law enforcement do their jobs,” he told the crowd.

“Always in moments like this, I try to pray as the Lord taught us to pray,” Vance said, the AP reported. The AP noted that Vance is Catholic. After the prayer, he walked into the risers and knelt down as the person was being helped, then returned to the podium to finish his remarks, the AP said.

The vice president’s official account, @VP, posted video of the moment with the caption: “Vice President JD Vance leads crowd in the Lord’s Prayer while first responders attend to a woman seated in the risers behind him.”

Back at the podium, Vance said, “She’s doing fine,” and that the woman had told him it was her first rally, according to a transcript published by American Faith. Newsweek reported that the woman appeared to recover.

Vance’s message afterward

Later Thursday, Vance wrote on X: “My prayers are with the woman who had a medical emergency at today's rally in Nebraska. I hope she has a speedy recovery. Thank you to the medical staff and first responders who reacted swiftly to make sure she was taken care of, and to the crowd for making sure she was able to be attended to.”

The woman’s name and condition have not been released. USA Today said it had asked the White House and Vance’s office for more information.

Vance this week

At the same Nebraska stop, Vance announced $1.3 billion of investment in domestic fertilizer manufacturing in the state, he said on X; Newsweek reported that two manufacturing facilities are opening as part of the deal.

On Wednesday, Vance and his son Vivek attended a Cincinnati Bengals practice and met players and coaches, the @VP account said. USA Today reported that Vance is scheduled to speak at rallies in Belgrade, Montana, and Topeka, Kansas, on Monday, Oct. 26.
