French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said Monday there were 2,331 people taken into police custody over the weekend, that more than 80% face prosecution and that dozens have already been jailed pending trial, including 13 in Marseille, Le Parisien reported with AFP. Darmanin said authorities 'incontestably failed' and blamed a lapse in intelligence on the ultra-left, while Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said he asked regional prefects for partial, localized curfews in some city centers and promised a 'massive' criminal response, franceinfo reported. Marseille banned all gatherings from noon to 8 p.m. Monday, and organizers have called a second day of protests for Saturday, Oct. 24.
