World News Update card: SpaceX Transporter-18 launches from Vandenberg, California
Graphic: World Brief Now

Liftoff at 1:32 p.m. CT from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E), Vandenberg Space Force Base, California; booster B1082 landed successfully on Landing Zone 4 (LZ-4) at about 1:39 p.m. CT. Falcon 9 lofted SpaceX’s Transporter-18 dedicated smallsat rideshare with 130 payloads toward sun-synchronous low-Earth orbit. Earlier today Crew-13 left Cape Canaveral for the ISS; overseas, the Flydubai cockpit probe, Trump’s Iran choice, and Pakistan–Afghanistan airstrike claims remain the top world stories.

Launch: Falcon 9 Transporter-18 (after liftoff)

Rocket
SpaceX Falcon 9 Block 5
Launch site
Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E), Vandenberg Space Force Base, California
Time (CT)
Liftoff at 1:32 p.m. CT Thursday, Oct. 1 (T-0 1:32 p.m. CT / 11:32 a.m. PDT / 18:32 UTC). Landing Zone 4 touchdown about 1:39 p.m. CT (T-0 + 7:25 on the SpaceX mission timeline).
Result
Liftoff confirmed (Launch Library 2 status: Launch in Flight; payload deployments continue about an hour after liftoff). Booster B1082 landed successfully at Landing Zone 4 (RTLS) after its 25th flight — Launch Library 2 records landing success with the description that B1082 landed on LZ-4. NASASpaceFlight and Next Spaceflight also report the Oct. 1 liftoff and LZ-4 touchdown.
Cargo
Dedicated smallsat rideshare to low-Earth / sun-synchronous orbit (SpaceX Transporter program). SpaceX says there are 130 payloads on this flight, including cubesats, microsats, hosted payloads, two spacecraft with reentry vehicles, and four orbital transfer vehicles carrying 41 of those payloads for later deployment. Notable customers reported by NASASpaceFlight and Spaceflight Now include Google’s Project Suncatcher M1 AI/TPU prototype, Starfish Space’s first Otter servicing vehicle, NASA’s SPRITE CubeSat, and Varda Space reentry-factory spacecraft.
Booster
B1082, 25th flight (reused; previously USSF-62, OneWeb Launch 20, NROL-145, and 21 Starlink missions). Landed successfully at Landing Zone 4 (LZ-4), Vandenberg Space Force Base — return-to-launch-site.

Our view Another step toward Mars: stacking 130 smallsat customers on a high-flight-count reused Falcon 9, then putting that booster back on LZ-4 about seven and a half minutes later, is how SpaceX keeps launch cadence and booster reuse high — the industrial base that feeds Starship work aimed at eventually carrying people to Mars.

Launch Library 2 logged Liftoff! at 18:32 UTC and records that B1082 landed on Landing Zone 4 after its 25th flight. NASASpaceFlight reported the Falcon 9 left SLC-4E at 11:32 a.m. PDT and that B1082-25 safely touched down at LZ-4 after a return-to-launch-site burn. SpaceX’s mission page listed the LZ-4 landing at T+7:25; payload deployments begin about 54 minutes after liftoff.

World news since the Vandenberg window

  • Crew-13 already chasing the station after Florida liftoff Hours before Transporter-18 left California, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 lofted NASA’s Crew-13 mission from SLC-40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Base at 10:10 a.m. CT, and booster B1101 landed on LZ-40 at about 10:18 a.m. CT. Commander Jessica Watkins, Pilot Luke Delaney, CSA astronaut Joshua Kutryk, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov are aboard Crew Dragon Grace bound for the ISS. (NASA, World Brief Now)
  • Flydubai cockpit attack: identity and motive still unconfirmed Israeli and U.S. officials continued to treat Wednesday’s Dubai-to-Tel Aviv Flydubai incident as a foiled cockpit attack after an Omani copilot allegedly stabbed the captain and the jet plunged thousands of feet before an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, the Associated Press reported. Flydubai has suspended Israel flights while investigators work. (Associated Press via The Hill)
  • Trump frames Iran as escalate-or-deal; Pakistan–Afghanistan airstrike dispute continues President Trump said the U.S. must decide whether to “blow them up or make a deal” with Iran, Politico reported. Separately, Afghanistan’s Taliban government said Pakistani overnight airstrikes in Kunar and Helmand killed civilians; Pakistan said the strikes hit militant hideouts, Al Jazeera reported with Reuters.
